The engineer´s job in the modern Army is vastly more complex / than it was even during the last war. The speed of troop / movements, carried out by mechanical and motorised units. / requiros intensive and fast preparations by the engineers. / Obstacles have to be removed, fortifications and trenches to / be built, bridges have to be flung across rivers. To train / the men to highes t efficiency, work such as bridge-building / is strictly timed. These photographs show Royal Engineers / constructing a pontoon-bridge across a river 60 yards wide. / By perfectly organised co-operation, the job was done within / a few hours. The finished bridge was strong enough to allow / even heavy tanks to pass it safely at considerable speed. / O.P.S. the last pontoon is being placed in positicion. / PLP 8128."
TELEPHONE CENTRAL 6677 "
