Numismatics

The Scientific Society The Canary Museum has a numismatic fund composed of two collections:

Alejandro Lifchuz Collection

It consists of 1,073 monetary and pre-currency pieces ceded in 1976 by the owner of the collection to the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The pieces were deposited in The Canary Museum, being accessible to the public upon request.

The collection has been studied by María del Carmen Burgos, this analysis being the origin of the current classification in the three sections that it presents:

Roman numismatics: consisting of 321 denarii belonging to the republican stage and 696 imperial bronze and silver coins.

Spanish numismatics: composed of 50 bronze and silver coins distributed in seven series (Hispanic-Greek, Hispanic-Phoenician, Hispanic-Carthaginian, Hispanic-Latin, Ibero-tarthetic, Iberian and Libyan-Phoenician).

Cylinder-seals: six Mesopotamian pieces in which bas-relief is used as a recording technique.

Siemens Siegmund Lothar Collection

Donated by its owner in 2007. This monetary set is composed of 594 pieces minted in mints corresponding to ancient Hispania, constituting a complement of great value to the collection described above.
