On Monday, May 20 at 19:00 h., the Scientific Society The Canary Museum presents the book "Lothar Siemens: Tribute from The Canary Museum", a new publication in memory of its president, Lothar Siemens Hernández, who died on February 28, 2017. The event will feature the participation of the current president of the institution, Diego López Díaz, and with the interventions of Rosario Alvarez Martínez, Guillermo García-Alcalde, Manuel Lobo Cabrera and Víctor Montelongo Pa

rada.Lothar Siemens Hernández was born on August 16, 1941 in las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Graduated in Philosophy and Letters, he studied musicology, ethnology and prehistory in Hamburg, and soon excelled as a noted musicologist. Linked from his childhood to El Museo Canario, he held various management positions in the society, of which he was president between 1991 and 1999. In 2005 he was appointed Honorary Partner of the insti

tution. The commemorative book, which spans 592 pages, has been coordinated by Juan Antonio Martínez de la Fe and Luis Regueira Benítez, who have composed a volume divided into three sections. In the first, "Articles in Homage", thirteen authors present many other unpublished works related to the life or research of the honoree. In this way, articles signed by Rosario Alvarez Martínez, Fernando Betancor Pérez, Ismael Fernández de la Cuesta, Guillermo García-Alcalde, Manuel González Ortega, Manuel Lobo Cabrera, Tomás Marco, Ma del Carmen Martín Marichal, Víctor Montelongo Parada, Daniel Roca Arencibia, Isabel Saavedra Robaina, Isidoro Santana Gil and Laura Vega. One of these articles is also post-state work by Siemens, which appears as co-author of Manuel Lobo's contribution to the life of Pedro Gallardo, chapel master of the Cathedral of the Canary Islands in the sixteent

h century. The second part, "Selected Writings", is a small anthology of texts by Lothar Siemens published in various magazines, books and newspapers. With the works chosen it is a question of summarizing the polyhedral personality of an intellectual who was not limited to the field of musicology, in which he excelled especially, but also entered as disparate terrain as history, folklore and even literary criticism. They stand out in this selection, so they provide to know some less obvious features of their personality, some articles published in the insular press, which show on the one hand a combative Siemens in defense of their sociocultural ideals, and on the other hand to a solid, frontline intellectual, who was hidden under the pseudonym Jorge R

oque.La third part of the volume , "Bibliographical Approach", is a compendium of Lothar Siemens publications. The publishers of the tribute sign this compilation, which exceeds 350 titles among books, articles and other various contributions. This set is presented as a tool for biographers and researchers to easily access Siemens' huge set of contributions to Canarian and universal culture, and at the same time serves as a summary of a life dedicated to the dual and noble activity of learning and disseminating.
